The River of Life Journey Center was created in 1994. It was born out of the shared vision of the two therapist in the practice, Jerrold Paul and Kathryn Bindig, of a therapeutic counseling practice that would reflect and embody the professional training of each therapist as well as their shared theology and philosophy. The name of the practice,” The River of Life Journey Center” reflects their theology and philosophy in that they view all life as; a fluid, life giving, and an ever unfolding journey.
In a time when managed health care, brief therapy, long waiting list and impersonal and expensive services are the norm, we have created a professional counseling practice that offers services to people in a relaxed, individualized, respectful and professional manner without all the labels, stress, and often de-humanizing requirements and mandates of managed care centers. The River of Life Journey Center actualizes this approach by offering no waiting list, total confidentiality, a liberal sliding fee scale, and extremely flexible scheduling that fits our clients needs.
Philosophy and Theology
In addition to our extensive professional training it is our basic belief system that informs the manner in which we function and relate to our clients as professional therapists.
We ascribe to the belief that all people are created in the image of God, and therefore have the potential for living full, healthy, peaceful, productive lives—regardless of the circumstances and challenges they encounter through their living. There are undoubtedly bumps and challenges for all of us as we move through our life that block the flow of our living. As people encounter these challenges it is our mission to journey with them as they seek to work through these obstacles and to overcome the blocks they experience in the flow of life’s creative energies and to find their way to more wholeness and balance in their life.
We embrace a holistic view of human beings, that reflects a blending of mind, body and spirit. As such, we operate from the belief that a person’s thinking, feeling and behavior need to be in harmony in order for them to live the balanced, congruent, and centered life God created them to live.
Though we ourselves come from a Christian perspective, we work with people of all faiths and of no faith. We make no attempt to promote a particular religious response, but rather work with people to assist them in finding their own answers to peaceful living.
Out of respect for the dignity and worth of people, we do not identify our clients as “sick” or disordered”. We view people as asking for help to get re-centered on their life journey. Therefore in our counseling practice with people we pay attention to: the presenting problems, social circumstances, current and past processes, patterns of communication, past experiences and scripting, their emotional states, and issues of the spirit.
